Suffering as Grace

Often when we suffer, our first impulse is to ask, “how did I get here?” Next we wonder, “how do I get out of here.” Rather than trying to escape from pain, Thomas shares what it means to escape into the pain. When we suffer completely, when we suck the marrow out of suffering, it reveals itself as grace in disguise.

GOLDEN BUDDHA

Thomas shares a deeply personal story of an encounter he had with his younger brother in a visionary realm. Seeing his brother as a Golden Buddha, Thomas knew at once that not only his brother, but all of humanity truly embodies Buddha-nature, truly bears the Light of Christ. He observes that the call to be radically kind toward all of life is both exhilarating and terrifying.

SURRENDER

From the perspective of the body and mind, there is almost always something that needs improvement, needs fixing. This basic orientation of desire and aversion is the seat of dissatisfaction in human life. But notice, there’s a part of you that is already still. Already surrendered. Release the bracing in the body-mind and open up into the expanse of pure awareness. When you do this, you return to your basic nature, and hear the subtle symphonies sounding once more.

PAPANCHA

The Buddha taught that papancha, or conceptual proliferation on the present moment, is one of the key ways that we suffer. In a modern variation, Rupert Spira points out that rivulets of thought constantly trickle through the mind, blunting the deeper feelings of discomfort in the body. The remedy? We can relax as aware presence, dropping all agendas and calling off the search. When we do this, problems are no problems at all. We discover that we’re already free.
